If you have just started your copywriting journey or started writing in general and wondering how to grab the best clients or even your first client with no experience and no portfolio, Keep on reading!

I have been excited to know and read the daily success stories of copywriters who are not only earning handsome money but also have established their name in the industry.

Nowadays there have been stories, articles, and blog posts published about writing professionals transferring their career path to copywriter cuz they believe that this is the right choice

Why I decided to write?

Many of my clients and even students have asked me that what a copywriter should do when they have just started out and has no experience working with big names cuz you know everyone cannot catch the big fish. What their perspective should be? Can they be successful like other copywriters who are making a big name?

This had me switched on the bulb of my head and I thought why not share with you all guys. I understand that there are so many writers cum copywriters who are striving hard just to catch that big fish or work with the Fortune 500 company. But what action to take when they are just beginning their journey and need credibility to show the prospective clients.

Here I provide my answer to that question which needs to be answered as no one is answering those right now and nowhere to be found.

What’s the formula?

All those people who are into the published stories have worked with big names in the industry or are associated with top 500 fortune companies which gives them credibility and increases their trust. This creates a cycle of increasing credibility and so the command over market price.

To be precise and short, the answer is you have the skills and your story to prove your credibility as a writer.

Prerequisites- What needs to be prepared first?

Before explaining my viewpoint and the action plan, I need you to drop any disbelief in yourself and your capability. Drop the under confidence you have in your skills. Drop the disbelief that you do not have enough experience.

If you have worked earlier in any type of place, If you have been living your life doing something, if you have been able to read, write, experience, you do have the potential to make it big in the industry. Even if you can’t or would not like to be big, you will surely catch small fish only if you are willing to go into the sea and go deep.

What we tend to believe as a project seeker?

As a copywriter and a project seeker, you believe that you need to have an exceptional portfolio, you believe that you need to be a very good writer with lots of clients, a variety of works, and a degree in the language. Let me tell you, this is not how the industry works. This is not how employers are looking out for, at least for those who are just starting their writing journey and initial copywriting works.

What They seek as Hirers?

Few of my friends cum partners who are also business people and look out for writers for their companies always ask me to find a good one for them. When asked about their expectations from the writers they literally need only these things- able to write, able to work on time, able to communicate well, able to take responsibilities, and able to contribute.

Doesn’t all these traits already available to all of us? Even not all, few of them for sure.

Skills, A way of writing, voicing, communication style, grammar, and other writing traits are learnable and can be taught by any organization with time but the above traits are not easy to adapt, nor it is easy to be taught. Hence, today’s entrepreneurs, hiring managers, and marketing people are looking for people who already have these necessary skills.

But if you are saying that, hey I do not have these skills or have no proof of evidence that you possess them, then I think you just need to think about yourself more better now.

You might have not realized but everyone has them. They only need a good analysis of their previous work, daily actions, and unrealized stories.

A long, uncomfortable but required lesson!

I once worked with an MLM ( Multi-Level Marketing) company when I was in grade 9. After clearing out my 10th board exams, I then joined a similar kind of company but with a twist of NGO. I could not say that I had a blast in those years, nor that I never regrated that time… but I can surely say that just because I worked there, today, I always speak about those days whenever I had a conversation with my new clients or my students who I guide with copywriting or writing styles.

What I learned in those days, is still with me and so are the stories that I created during those years. As a 9th grader and working in a cut-throat competition environment and a team to manage taught me a lot of things. It taught me how to be on time, it taught me how to manage people, it taught me how to speak and convey my message clearly, it taught me when to accept the fact that the prospect is not going to convert and I should drop convincing more. It also taught me how to work with people and adapt fast as per the situation.

Those stories and the associated learning and traits, directly give my prospective clients an impression that I already have those traits, I am an expert on those traits and If I am good with people and communicating well, I can also be good with copywriting automatically.

Did you get a little on how our previous experience helped us build on what we are today and how it can increase trust among your client and even showcase your required skills without overpowering them with words?

Hey, you have your own story. You now have proof and you make them realize without spitting out directly which seems more fake.

And worry not, my words are not swallowed. Science has backed it up.

Our words are backed with Science and Behavior

As a copywriter, I have always been interested in psychology and science along with writing and I believe things that science can prove are definitely to be trusted.

I am not sure what is the term in psychology is called, but for the sake of naming, I always say it as “ assertive transfers”

What I mean by this is, there is a behavior of the person who thinks that a person expert in one category or skill is expert in another category or skill also.

It happened with me too!

If you ask me, there is an incident that happened with me once in which I got affected with the same psychological behavior. I was looking for a story writer once and got connected with an author. Since she was a best-seller author in her niche, I automatically thought that she might be a great story writer. However, She honestly confesses that she is a good author but if you ask her to do story writing, she is terrible.

If you have any skills related to the writing world or skills which your potential clients admire, you can simply use this psychology behavior in your favor using a good story structure and connection.

Then, Of course, you need to follow the rule of structuring a story and communicate well.

Become an Expert by Showing All and whatever you’ve Got!

Do not fear to connect, ask and reach out upfront.

Do not fear people’s perceptions.

The one fit for you and the one where you can fit will find each other if you keep going on.

To be successful even with no experience and no portfolio as a copywriter or writer in general, you need to put your story which is relatable to your prospective clients.

Of course, this is one of the many ways you can approach them. And there are still many ways to pave your way up.
