Qualities Of A Compelling Copywriter- A complete guide you need to know to outshine yourself in the market

Being in a “General” category of anything is not fascinating. Nor is to be called upon as “just like an average “

One of my clients asked me a very genuine question in one of my one-o-one sessions. I was amazed by how many more people are starting into the copywriting or writing world but have no clue on what all is expected from them to have at the very beginning or during their career.

I was also shocked to realize that if a person does not have any idea of what is expected of their service, how they are going to provide quality in their work. If there is no quality, how are they going to shine or even survive in our industry?

I have once heard a famous quote that,

“Things of quality have no fear of time”

These lines hit me hard.

I always feared what will happen if I am not able to keep up with the changing time, changing technology, and changing perspective of my work.

What if the time changes, What if with time I am not relevant, What if tomorrow my style of work is not appealing to the world that I am serving?

These fears halted at once when I accept the fact that If I am bringing quality to the table, I should not fear the changing time. Of course, changes are inevitable But I should be able to cope up with the changes If I am focusing to serve my clients the best quality work.

“Life is like a camera,

Focus on what’s important,

Capture the good times,

And if things are not working out,

Just take another shot.”

These lines are for you to cheer up a little.

After reading a lot of blogs, YouTube channels, library books, and whatnot, you have finally decided to work as a copywriter or as a writing professional in general. Much much talk….. Now let’s get into it right now…..

Just a little disclaimer before we start, these tips and qualities can be applied to copywriting as well as any writing professionals in general. These might be going to be a lengthy informative read but hey hang in there and keep reading to make yourself fully prepared and not just half dimwit person.

Keep in mind always, that “Half knowledge is a dangerous thing”

Now, dive into the pool of golden rules/ qualities of a copywriter who is worthy of your attention and what you should learn to be one of them:

Creativity

Writing has a creative nature to its core. What a writer wrote is not only his thoughts but also his/her creativity. The way we use language, the way we mold our idea to present to our user, and the new technique we apply in our writing process to generate a new way or style of writing is not creativity, then what it is?

Anything which is generated or created by a person with its uniqueness and personal touch is a creative product. Any creative product uses creativity for its existence.

Yes, you are right. Writers are creative minds, and at the same time, Writers are also introverts.

If you want to be a copywriter who is unique and has their own charm, you should definitely focus on enhancing your creative abilities. Of course, some people will not like your idea, some people will also question your creativity, but if you are continuously learning and know that your idea is not the normal norm, Just waitttttttttt……The right client, The right team, and The right project will fall into your bucket sooner or later.

Good Listening Skills

Listening skills are always the number one essential for any profession dealing with the public in general.

As a copywriter, your job is to make sure that the message that your client wants to convey is clear and the target audience is going to listen to them, believe them, and follow your lead.

If you are not listening, you are not understanding the objective of your piece.

There is a famous quote that “ A goal with objective is just a dream “

In the same context, I must say,

“ A copy without listening to the audience & clients is just a bunch of words put together for display “

Planning Skills

As a copywriter, if you have no planning methodology or management technique that you apply to your working schedule you are doomed to fail.

Planning is required to make sure your work is on time and the right path.

It is very common to see that while writing, writers immerse themselves so much sometimes that they get lost and complete no work on time.

This is surely a plan to get a disaster to your work and profession.

“ If you have no plan, you are planning to fail “

Sense of curiosity

If you are curious, you are gonna be a success in any field.

Curiosity brings fire to your soul and that fire helps you power your engine and thus improve your copy works.

Language Skills

If you can’t speak the language of the general audience, how are you gonna touch them with your messages in your copies?

Language especially local wordings are really important to make your audience feel attached.

A good reader

Y’all know writers are supposed to be good readers.

Simplicity

My mantra is “ Make it simple but significant”.

Our writing and copies should be Easy To Be Understood Even By A Schoolgoer. Then only our target personas can be able to understand our message more clearly.

Research Skill

Quality work requires in-depth knowledge which can only be achieved through a good research skill

Time management

Manage your time so that you can have a balance of work, learn, earn and enjoy your life.

Let me tell you one guilty pleasure which I always enjoy.

Guess???

Yesssssss……………… Distraction !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just roaming through social networking sites while researching about a topic once and a video popped up on my screen in my suggestion section.

It is really a cool one by Tim Urban named: “Inside the mind of the master procrastinator.”

The struggle against procrastination is real, and it’s time management’s greatest foe. But, why do we do this to ourselves? Well, that was a question was answered by Tim of Wait but Why in a very humorous and understandable way.

If you do not want to miss out. Do check it out on Ted Ex platform as well, Here!

Confident to voice opinions & ideas

Speak up your mind. Speak up your ideas. Speak up your opinions.

And you shall shine either by repeated revisions or by your acceptable unique taste.

Straightforward message

We spoke about simplicity above. But it is incomplete without a straight call to action in your copy. Your copy must perform the job and to do that we must ask our reader.

Up to date with the industry

It helps is improving your current skills and upgrading with the changing technology, which is a must for this generation

Up to date with the target audience

You must live in the forest to know what it feels like to live there.

The same goes for copywriting,

You must be up to date with the target audience to meet your copy target.

Learning attitude

A copywriter is always a learner at heart.

Thick Skin

A copywriter’s job is to get other people’s words out there and to do it in the best way possible. Copywriters have to write to make their clients sound knowledgeable and interesting, and their products enticing.

They need to write for their clients’ audiences, not their own

In that process sometimes, their ideas or voice might be turned down. They should be able to endure rejection, criticism, and sometimes to put aside their ego.

Sense of Humour

One of my loved quotes is,

“Every time you find humor in a difficult situation, you win”

You must cultivate a sense of humor in your work or copies whenever you can to shine out.

Humans love to laugh. If you can give what they love, they are gonna like you.

Knows when to stop

It makes me remember Paulo Coelho famous quotes:

“We humans have two great problems: The first is knowing when to begin; the second is knowing when to stop “

As a copywriter you want to give your best, you want to write more, you want to take more time to make it perfect.

But when you are working, we should always remember that we are not voicing out our thoughts but the client’s motive and message.

Get mentorship

No one is successful without a good mentor. You can of course climb the mountain yourself but with lots of bruises, fall, and may be even get killed on the way. Mentorship will help you guide with the technique which is right to climb and also the way to tackle any rough patch.

Marketing knowledge

Thou who know the market, shall rule the market.

True, if your marketing skills are great, you are then a great copywriter. Marketing is the Queen of copywriting and Communication its Father.

Jack of all, master of one

Copywriters are supposed to be Jack of all and master of one.

They are supposed to have power like T- shaped competence.

Persuasive power

To move your audience, you first need to move your words from just telling them some information to making them believe in your words. You can only persuade someone through your words when they trust you.

Do you know that :  The average human attention span is now shorter than a goldfish’s. A recent study found that the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000 to eight seconds today. It is reported that goldfish have a 9-second attention span.

And your biggest obstacle?????

You need to grab this attention span towards your written copies. And this is your work soul.
